By Angela Ash
“For it is plain, as anyone can see, we're simply meant
to be.”
David Hatfield met Missy Ward in high school. No, it’s not
really that simple. David was never even supposed to attend Southern
High School. However, after one circumstance following another,
that is where he ended up. He liked it there. His friends went to
school there. His future wife went to school there, but he didn’t
know that part… not just yet.
But it didn’t take long for David to meet Missy’s eyes
across the crowded hallway. (Yes, I know that it is supposed to
be “across a crowded room”, but this is a true story
here, and this is precisely the way it all happened.) David began
building up the courage to approach her, while systematically driving
his entire family crazy with stories of the “really pretty
girl at school”. In a moment of bravery not usually experienced
by mere mortals, David grabbed her arm in mid conversation and announced
“You’re going to go out with me”. Although this
method may appear to be rather Neolithic, he must have done something
right, because she answered “Okay”.
So that was the beginning. Not many people can tell that story.
Very few individuals can attest that they have known their life
long mate since the days when Algebra was the devil and clear skin
was an elusive dream. However, this was the case with David and
Missy. Sure they had their occasional turmoil, but the two soon
became completely inseparable.
To this day, anyone who knows David and Missy will be in complete
agreement that they are truly soul mates. No, not the soul mates
of sappy romance novels where they spend countless hours staring
deeply into each other’s eyes, but the type of soul mates
who finish each other’s sentences, who pick the same movie
at the theater ticket counter, who are both completely obsessed
with watching Lost on dvd until 4 in the morning, and who might
even reach for the same pair of socks at Target.
OK… now to the part you really want to hear about. Then came
the wedding! Oh wait… we are completely skipping the proposal,
and that was WAY cool. David threw a skating party for Missy’s
birthday. You should be able to read about in the record books,
because I believe that Missy was officially the oldest “little
girl” to ever experience one of these wonderful delights.
That is the true beauty of David and Missy. He proposed to her on
bended knee (as well as could be navigated whilst on roller skates)
in the middle of the arena, gently humming as Zug Izland’s
“Always” created the perfect soundtrack for the moment.
Everyone cried. No, I mean… even the man sweeping in the corner
was seen swiping at his eyes.
Then the hunt for the rings began. Something extremely unique was
in order. Since the couple both proudly boasted an Irish Heritage
(celebrated every Memorial Day weekend at the greatest party known
to man… commonly known as the great “IDP”), they
felt that Celtic bands were the way to go. And they knew exactly
where to look. Celtic Revival displayed the best selection they
found… and all online. I know… I know. Buying your wedding
rings online may sound a little scary, but their fears were quickly
dispelled after speaking to Joseph Keane via telephone. Their rings
arrived in record time, and they were exactly what they envisioned
(and stared at on the computer screen for hours at a time).
Of course, the attire had to be just as bewitching. Missy was actually
a very unique bride. She marched straight into David’s Bridal
and selected her wedding gown and her bridesmaids’ dresses
in literally minutes. Everyone was shocked… and did I say
relieved? With Missy’s exquisite taste, her friends and family
had assumed that the “gown trip” would be a long one,
but she selected a beautiful ivory gown, trimmed creatively in black
in record time.
The guys had a similar experience at Sam Meyers Formal Wear. David
selected black tuxedos with white pin stripes. He was especially
surprised with their ease in fitting everyone in his wedding party,
considering that his attendants ranged from the normal to the very…
well… can we say “professional wrestler”?
David and Missy did yet another thing a little differently than
most. David’s friend, Theresa, stood on his side, while Missy’s
brother, Jonathan, stood on her side. While David and Missy were
both close to both party members, they decided that it made much
more sense to place them on the side that corresponded with their
individual relationships, rather than by which parts they were given
at birth. No… Jonathan didn’t wear a dress, but Theresa
looked very beautiful in hers!
And the special day began to quickly approach. So what did David
and Missy do? Well, as any savvy couple would, they consulted the
pages of Special Occasions Magazine and attended the Special Occasions
Bridal Expo, finding everything to make their day beautiful, fun,
creative and unique. Of course, David and Missy branded everything
that they touched with their own degree of “special”.
They actually had so much fun and received so many compliments that
they instinctively began their own business, creating custom wedding
toppers and other unique arrangements. (See advertisement on page
.)
The theme for the wedding was the Nightmare Before Christmas…
the epic love story of Jack and Sally. Everything was black and
white. White pumpkins and fall foliage adorned the reception tables.
The little girls wore fairy wings. It was pure magic.
Of course, the day started off perfectly. Hold on… did you
actually believe that? But angels described as hairdressers always
come through to save the day. Nikki Berding did a wonderful job
with Missy’s hair… at her house! While Nikki’s
new salon, The N Salon, was still under construction, she invited
Missy into her own living room to ensure that Missy had the “perfect
hair”.
Her soon-to-be sister-in-laws should have followed Missy’s
example. However, they had this brilliant idea that they could do
each other’s hair and save time and money. Needless to say,
this didn’t exactly go as planned. They were to meet up a
few hours before the limousine was to arrive at their mother’s
house. That way all they would have to do was slip on their dresses
and hop in. Yeah… right. They arrived at their mother’s
house, hair in a condition that can not quite be described, recounting
tales of hot curling irons, a “helpful” friend with
the best of intentions, the bottle of rum that had offered its assistance,
and a very surprised boyfriend (now, surprisingly so, fiancee) who
had discovered it all in the middle of his apartment floor. The
moral of this story is: Ladies, get your hair done by a professional!
Otherwise, you will not save time. You will not save anything resembling
money, especially after purchasing countless clips and pins that
do not work anywhere near the manner in which the package illustrates.
PLUS, you will save your bride an anxiety attack. (Those aren’t
pretty.)
Once everyone was finally assembled, the transportation was provided
by Community & Aztec Limousine. Prior to booking, David and
Missy visited their showroom, and they were amazed by the selection
that they offered for any style or budget. While not a stranger
to Aztec & Community Limousine (consistently used for special
occasions and nights on the town), they were still pleasantly surprised
by the service that they received.
David and Missy had an outdoor ceremony in the memorial area at
Cave Hill Cemetery. Some may say… “Get married in a
cemetery?” Well, it wasn’t exactly like that. Most people
will agree that Cave Hill is one of the most beautiful locations
in all of Louisville. While, of course it is used as an active cemetery,
there are many other locations and sections of interest throughout,
including monuments and statues, park-like areas, lakes and wooded
alcoves. With help from Bella Wedding Rentals for the unity candles,
the chair covers and other assorted accessories, it proved to be
the perfect setting for the perfect autumn day.
Commonwealth Musicians provided the music for the ceremony, and
the wedding party walked down the aisle to such treasures as “Favorite
Things” from the Sound of Music, “Colors Of The Wind”
from Disney’s Pocahontas, “Wish Upon A Star” from
Disney’s Pinnochio, and classics from the likes of the Beatles.
Everyone enjoyed the music. Many guests stated that it simply “made
the ceremony”.
The bridesmaids carried beautiful arrangements by Lloyd’s
Florist, while the groom’s attendants had a special adornment
on their jackets by the same. The bride’s bouquet was simple
but elegant – a natural display of white roses.
The ceremony was performed by a close family friend, Pastor Kevin
Neathery. It was a mixture of warmth and sincerity, while the fall
breeze rustled through the pines.
Time to party! After careful consideration, Glassworks was selected
for the reception site. David and Missy fell in love with the black
and white floor upstairs. Conveniently located and with easy parking,
there was no decision to be made here. Surrounded by beautiful works
of art… well… GLASS, it was the perfect choice.
And who better to provide the music that gets the party going than
Music In Motion? They were awesome! They had everything that the
guests requested, while also mixing in appropriate interludes to
keep up the action. The dance floor was always full, packed with
ages from 3 to 73. I think the highlight of the night was when David
was called out to the floor to the opening strains of “It’s
Raining Men”, quickly to be surrounded by all of his male
friends, including the pastor! What a moment!
Oh yes… all this fun made everyone quite hungry. Naiman’s
Catering provided a vast array of food to tempt everyone’s
palate. Several guests (not to call out any names… like…
Steve… or anyone in particular) made more than one trip to
the buffet!
But the crowning glory was the cake. Adorned with David and Missy’s
custom made cake topper, Terry from A Piece of Cake somehow turned
a beautiful scene from the silver screen into an edible fantasy.
They honestly hesitated before cutting it, until Missy remembered
that the divine creation referred to as “red velvet”
lay beneath. Then it was only a matter of time before icing was
smeared all over their faces, and they were eating the cake with
their fingers.
However, all good things to come to an end, which is probably a
good thing, because I don’t believe David’s mother could
have taken one more twirl on the dance floor. David and Missy were
hustled out the door to head off to their weekend in Bardstown,
Kentucky. You see, they had a very smart idea. Rather than take
straight off to their “main” honeymoon, they took a
short one first, therefore allowing some much needed recuperation
time. They wanted to be fully rested before they were “leaving
on a jet plane…” to Sandals in sunny Jamaica! Thanks
to Kim at Personal Travel, they had the trip of their lives! She
even set up a nifty little honeymoon registry for them, so that
guests could deposit straight into their specially designed honeymoon
account, rather than buy them 27 toasters.
This couple was also smart enough to realize that choosing a “great”,
not simply “good”, photographer can make or break your
wedding memories. This is why no one would do but Brown Studio.
After meeting Richard, David was won over by his easy-going personality.
He felt like he could joke with him, and point out funny things
that he wanted to capture in time. Missy loved his motivation. When
he decided to get something done, he did it… and get out of
the man’s way! They began the day with Brown Studio, and Richard
was the last person that they saw when they pulled away, camera
still in hand, getting that last shot of “Just Married”
sprawled across the back window.
We are now at the end of our story, but like most good stories,
it never really ends. David and Missy will keep the love that began
so long ago, and they can continue to share this love by helping
brides just like you have the wedding of their dreams.
